About the Role
To support our growing bioacoustics-related business, we are currently recruiting at our UK office for a Head of Bioacoustics Technology position, reporting to the Managing Director.

Aquatec develops and manufactures solutions for marine mammal monitoring and bycatch mitigation, with an in-house engineering team that comprises acoustics, electronics and software engineers. Within the role, you will be expected to provide the interface between the engineering team and the needs of regulators, specifiers and end users of the technology. You will be in regular contact with marine mammal scientists around the world.

Within the role you will be expected to develop the bioacoustics arm of the business, take part in product development and testing, and support existing users of products. The role requires someone who has a well-rounded mix of personal, scientific, and business development skills.

About You
You will be degree qualified with a Masters or PhD in Marine Biology or similar. You will be a citizen of the European Community or will have a permanent right to work in the United Kingdom. You will have practical field experience in the use of static acoustic monitoring systems, and a good understanding of bioacoustics principles. You will be able to process and present bioacoustics data using Matlab, C or both. Ideally you will be in a similar position, or actively working in marine mammal research in the field, and looking for a new challenge. You will need to be competent and confident in the representation of Aquatec to potential customers as well as confident with Aquatec’s internal team to build and expand the company’s business.

Marine mammal monitoring programme project leader

Applications are invited for a one year position leading a marine mammal monitoring programme in Co. Mayo on the west coast of Ireland. The marine mammal monitoring programme is grant aided by Shell E&P Ireland through RSK Environment Ltd.

The candidate will ideally be a postdoctoral researcher, employed through the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre (CMRC), University College Cork and will need to be based close to the study area in Broadhaven Bay, Co. Mayo.

Background:

Under a development plan for the CORRIB gas field off western Ireland, Enterprise Energy Ireland Ltd. commissioned the Coastal & Marine Resources Centre (CMRC), University College Cork to conduct an independent cetacean monitoring programme in northwest Ireland in 2001 - 02. Due to the findings of preliminary field surveys in 2001 the study?s remit was expanded to also include other marine mammal species recorded in the study area. Research was undertaken in Broadhaven Bay (candidate Special Area of Conservation - cSAC), County Mayo and its adjoining coastal waters. The programme of marine mammal monitoring was continued in 2005, 2008 and 2009 during the CORRIB development?s marine phases, to safeguard protected species from potential impacts. Research efforts are currently being continued in 2010 and into 2011.

Position:

We are recruiting a project leader to coordinate the marine mammal monitoring programme. The position will be for February 2010 to January 2011 with potential for extension into 2011 pending funding confirmation.

Candidate: The researcher will require the following skills profile:

* A PhD in any area of marine mammal ecology (preferable, but suitably qualified candidates with relevant experience may also be considered)

* Relevant marine mammal research/monitoring experience

* Knowledge of marine mammal survey methodologies

* Experience of cetacean photo identification techniques

* Experience of acoustic monitoring of cetaceans (TPODs and CPODs currently used in the project)

* Experience of GIS (e.g. ArcGIS), databases (e.g. Access) and metadata standards

* Experience with statistical analysis and preferably statistical modelling

* Good publication track record

* Proven ability of team leadership and excellent oral and written communication skills

* Demonstration of project management and networking skills

* Proven ability to work in a small research group ideally in a remote location

Duration and salary: Duration is for a one year period subject to an initial review after three months and satisfactory progress. The salary for this position (gross) is fixed at ?43,000 p.a.

Tasks

The Norwegian Polar Institute seeks a research scientist to work with research related to monitoring of persistent organic pollutants/heavy metals and the effects of these in Arctic organisms, sea birds and mammals. A postdoctoral research fellow is sought to carry out research on marine vertebrates in waters of the western English Channel as part of the EU INTERREG funded Channel Habitat Atlas for Marine Resource Management. Work will be carried out in conjunction with that already underway as part of the South West Regional Development Agency funded Penninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy based around the establishment of the WaveHub, an offshore wave energy generating facility in the waters off North Cornwall.

This new full-time post is available from 1 June 2009 on a fixed term basis for two and a half years. Based at the University of Exeter, Cornwall Campus, the Research Fellow will lead research on cetaceans, seabirds, seals and basking sharks.

Work will be carried out under the supervision of Drs Brendan Godley, Stuart Bearhop, Annette Broderick and Matthew Witt, but the successful candidate will also liaise closely with other staff from a range of institutions in the UK and France.

The successful candidate will have a clearly established track record of publishing in peer reviewed ecological journals and will preferably have demonstrable project management and fund-raising skills. An ability to work both independently and within a team is essential.

Candidates should have experience of conducting boat-based marine fieldwork projects, and of using computer packages to organise and analyse field data. Experience of photo-identification techniques, use of electronic data recorders such as T-PODS and boat handling qualifications would all be highly desirable. Crucially, you must have proven ability to work effectively in small groups, good problem solving skills and a willingness to engage in the full range of field and lab-based tasks required to support a project of this kind.

Marine biodiversity Officer

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is dedicated to enhancing knowledge and understanding of Scotland´s whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) and the Hebridean marine environment through education, research and working within local communities as a basis for the lasting conservation of local species and habitats.

Specifically, HWDT:
1) conducts long-term monitoring of cetacean distribution, abundance and habitat use;
2) educates a wide range of people about the marine environment with a focus on cetaceans;
3) works within local communities to ensure long-term sustainability of the marine environment.

HWDT has undertaken monitoring and education projects for the past 15 years on the West Coast of Scotland. In the past 7 years it has also undertaken surveys from its 60ft motor-sailor Silurian and will undertake further surveys in the coming year throughout the waters of the Hebrides.

Job description

HWDT´s marine biodiversity officer will work on its boat and land based projects and will undertake the running of the science programme. A substantial part of the job involves being the main monitoring officer onboard Silurian: undertaking a variety of marine mammal surveys and
overseeing land-based monitoring projects.

He/she will work with and supervise volunteers on most projects. An additional role involves representing the Trust on local and regional forums. The appointee must be a qualified marine biologist with appropriate field and analytical experience.

The marine biodiversity officer will be responsible to the Senior Scientist and Executive Director and work closely with other members of the team including the science committee. This may include supervision of other science staff. This post holder will split his/her time between land and boat-based activities and office-based data entry and analysis tasks.

Key Tasks

- Main science officer on board Silurian during 7 and 10 day monitoring trips. Train and guide volunteers in marine mammal survey techniques (demonstrations and presentations). Train other staff members for relief work.
- Supervise the correct collection, entry and storage of visual and
acoustic survey data, and ensure the smooth functioning of onboard computer hardware and software.
- As part of the Silurian crew, participate fully in the domestic, sailing and social aspects of monitoring trips.
- Run boat-based element of field courses for students/general public.
- Provide on-board support for survey teams and be co-PI (Principal investigator) for Earthwatch teams.
- Work with scientific team to deliver agreed monitoring outputs.
- Work closely with education and sightings teams in developing and delivering a program of public talks and presentations.
- Work with in the science team on ongoing development of research and conservation strategy
- Work closely with the Education team providing input into education programmes and work with universities.
- Work with the science team to deliver commissioned research as appropriate.
- Work with other academic institutions in research collaborations and data sharing.
- Undertake science administration, dealing with general science-related enquiries, correspondence and consultations.
- Analysis and report writing.
- Representative on local marine stakeholder groups.
- Maintain and develop relationships with key local and regional marine stakeholders, organisations and operators.
- Media work including radio and TV interviews.
- Liaison with local boat operators to facilitate data collection and raise profile of HWDT locally. Including the development and management of the LOGGER data collection program and photo ID work on marine wildlife tour boats.
- Management of volunteers on office-based research projects.
- Equipment maintenance including repairs, loan agreements and purchasing, in particular the computer and acoustic equipment on Silurian.
- Assisting in funding applications and supporting the education, finance and administrative staff
- Assist with fundraising events when necessary.
- Occasional driving of mini-bus for marine mammal courses.
- Promote the Trust wherever possible, in particular recruiting new supporters and sponsors

Desirable skills

- Extensive knowledge and experience of marine mammal surveys techniques including visual and acoustic methods. Knowledge of IFAW LOGGER and PAM software.
- Computer proficient including Access, and GIS programs.
- Offshore sailing/boating experience (formal qualifications are not necessary).
- Excellent communication skills both written and oral.

Conditions:

Term of Contract and Probationary Period: The term of contract will be from March 2009 until March 2010 however the Trust may consider a shorter period of a minimum of 8 months. The position is subject to satisfactory performance during the initial three-month probationary period.

Location and travel: HWDT is based on Mull, and the appointee will work both from its offices in Tobermory and on the 60ft motor sailor Silurian. It is likely that at least 50% of work time will be conducted as monitoring officer onboard Silurian. This will involve living onboard Silurian with the other crew and volunteers for a considerable amount of time. (Trips normally last for 7-10 days). Traveling throughout Argyll, Lochaber and North West Scotland will be essential. Some other travel maybe required including overnight stays away from home.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF TWO UK MARINE MAMMAL JOBS

**MONITORING OFFICER**

Under the EU Habitats & Species Directive, three Special Areas of Conservation have been established in the UK with bottlenose dolphins principally in mind. Two of these occur in Cardigan Bay, West Wales - "Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC" in the north of the Bay and "Cardigan Bay SAC" in the south. To assist with the conservation management of the bottlenose dolphin population in the region, monitoring of abundance, distribution, reproductive success and population structure using a combination of surveys and photo-identification studies have been undertaken by Sea Watch in recent years.

The main tasks of this post of Cardigan Bay Monitoring Officer will be:

- To record, document, statistically analyse, and report indicators of the condition of bottlenose dolphins in both the Cardigan Bay and Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SACs;
- To collect images and refer to those from established catalogues, at sites within and outside the key study areas, using photographic ID techniques, to evaluate dolphin movements, abundance estimates and distribution;

- To monitor the number of bottlenose dolphins using the sites, and to assess the supporting habitat and estimate population structure (age and sex where possible);
- To gather evidence of any anthropogenic activities within the sites, while monitoring bottlenose dolphins.
- To provide information on sightings and movements of known individual dolphins (particularly those named ones adopted by children) in support of the Adopt a Dolphin scheme.
- To train and supervise volunteers and students in supporting the survey & monitoring.

A combination of vessel surveys and photo-ID will be used to achieve the above aims, concentrating particularly on the two SACs but extending more widely in Cardigan Bay and Welsh waters where appropriate. Although the target species is bottlenose dolphin, data on other cetacean species (particularly harbour porpoise) will be collected from the region. Besides fieldwork, the post holder will need to devote a significant portion of time to analysing data and assisting in writing up the results for publication.

We are looking for a postgraduate biologist with at least three years field-based research experience of cetaceans, preferably including bottlenose dolphins. He or she should have an ability to interact well with people of varied backgrounds, be able to train, motivate and oversee volunteers assisting in monitoring, and be capable of working in often arduous field conditions relatively independently (ideally with boat handling certification). It is essential that the candidate should have analytical skills and a good grounding in statistics. Preference may be given to candidates with a good working knowledge of DISTANCE and CAPTURE software, as well as of spatial analysis.

The post is initially for a period of six months but with potential extension beyond that subject to funding. It will be based at Sea Watch's office (Paragon House) in New Quay, Ceredigion, West Wales. Salary is £20,000 per annum, starting in April 2009.

**SIGHTINGS OFFICER**

The main task of the post holder will be to facilitate public education and awareness through the regular dissemination of environmental information, and to help develop Sea Watch's research and monitoring programmes.

Duties include:

- Recruitment of new observers, and feedback of information and advice to current contributors of sightings. -
- Assistance with verifying & inputting sightings records.
- Regular support & liaison with Regional Coordinators, with occasional visits to coastal regions to support local efforts to develop monitoring, information exchange, and local fund-raising. Review with regional co-ordinators the best approaches for strengthening the observer network

- Co-ordination of a National Whale & Dolphin Watch event (in 2009, to be held between the 18th and 26tth July).
- Maintenance of an active web site to serve as a prime medium of communication to observers, initiating regular
dissemination of new information, and recruiting new observers. Regular updating with news items, recent sightings, etc.
- Participation in training courses to teach regional co-ordinators and observers techniques of quantitative monitoring, species identification, and photo-ID. These may be tiered from beginners to advanced observers, so as to improve skills at different levels of experience
- Distribution of training aids (identification guide, slide pack and CD/video) to observers
- Assistance with preparation and editing of news sheets every two months, and writing occasional reports and other material of public/educational interest, in liaison with other staff
- Preparation of news releases for the media on major stories of environmental interest, and writing articles for specialist magazines
- Assistance with supervising students and other volunteers in New Quay, and supporting Monitoring Officer on some survey trips
- Participation and development of cetacean field projects as appropriate
- Attending meetings and giving public lectures on behalf of Sea Watch
- Answering correspondence & telephone queries from interested parties

We are looking for a person with a strong knowledge of UK cetaceans and marine environmental issues, as well as research experience preferably in marine mammals. He or she should have an ability to interact well with people of varied backgrounds (research scientists, government officials, conservationists, naturalists, fishermen, members of the oil and gas industry, shipping, etc). The candidate will need to be computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Photoshop, and at least basic statistical programs). Preference will be given to candidates with a good working knowledge of research analytical techniques and/or web editing..

Sea Watch Foundation is a national marine environmental charity concerned with monitoring whales and dolphins around the British Isles, and the conservation threats they face. It has a number of research projects including surveys and photo-ID studies of bottlenose dolphins and baleen whales, and also harbour porpoises in West Wales, minke whale studies of foraging ecology and population genetics in West Scotland, and spatial analytical studies of cetacean distribution and habitat preferences of cetaceans throughout the British Isles, using a variety of modelling approaches. PROJECT BACKGROUND:

It is now widely recognised that non-human animals have personalities, defined as individual behavioural differences that are consistent over time and/or across contexts. Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of personalities in a remarkably broad range of taxa from mammals to molluscs. Such personality traits have been shown to be heritable and therefore subject to selection, with potentially significant impacts on individual fitness. However, as yet the vast majority of studies of personality in non-human species have been restricted to laboratory studies, and there have been many recent calls for research that examines the ecological relevance of personality in natural systems.

This studentship will capitalise upon an existing long term study of individual variation in behaviour and reproductive performance in the grey seal to ask if maternal and offspring (pup) behavioural types (personalities) are correlated, and to examine the role of early personality type on social relationships in weaned pups.

The main objectives of this studentship will be:

(1) To test for correlations between maternal and offspring indices of behavioural type.

(2) To test whether offspring behavioural type is predicted by maternal behavioural type or maternal and/or pup state (body condition) and whether this differs for male and female pups. (3) To examine ontogenetic changes in pup behavioural types during lactation and beyond weaning.

(4) To examine the impact of behavioural type on the social behaviour of male and female weaned pups within the breeding colony.

The project will involve extensive field based behavioural observations of individually identified grey seals at breeding colonies around the UK combined with novel in-field quantitative experimental tests of individual personality. Candidates will require the ability to conduct prolonged field work in isolated and harsh conditions as part of a small field research team.

Candidates should demonstrate a capability for planning and implementing structured field observations and behavioural experiments. An understanding and appreciation of behavioural and evolutionary ecology is essential, and experience in multivariate statistics is desirable.

TRAINING:

The student will gain extensive training in field behavioural observation, compilation and maintenance of photo-ID database, spatial data manipulation and analyses within a GIS, statistical analyses (including quantifying personality and social associations), organisation of fieldwork logistics and safety in remote, isolated locations. The student will present work at national and international conferences.

BACKGROUND

Whalesafari Ltd in Andenes is the most successful arctic whale watching company with about
20 000 visitors during one whale watching season. In Andenes the edge of the continental shelf is closer to land than anywhere else along the coast of Norway and here a special deep sea area called Bleik Canyon was formed thousands of years ago. This extraordinary spot provides a good feeding area for whales and a great place for whale watching. The most common whale species seen is the sperm whale but occasionally also other whales like minke whales, pilot whales, fin whales, humpback whales, orcas, dolphins and porpoises are encountered.

The Whale Centre is situated in an old fish processing warehouse at the harbour front. Daily whalesafaris and museum tours are offered during the main whalesafari season May- September. Experience shows that whales are spotted during 95% of our safaris.

CONDITIONS

Whalesafari Ltd can offer you an exciting and challenging summer job in an international team and wonderful environment. As a whalesafari guide you will be responsible for guiding our visitors in our whale museum and out at sea onboard our whalesafari boats.The main whalesafari season is from 25 May to 15 of September with high season lasting from the end of June to the middle of August.

Accommodation is arranged and guides get their own private room at the Whale Centre. Part of the travel expenses are compensated for and paid upon arrival. Salary according to agreement.

•Language skills: Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English is essential. Most of our visitors come from Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark), Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and Italy. Marinelife/Biscay Dolphin Research Programme is looking to support a marine sciences student or similar for an exciting new research project monitoring cetaceans from the UK to the Mediterranean area on a quarterly basis.

The appointee will be proficient in cetacean observation and identification from big ships as well as oceanic sea bird identification. Working on board large ships in all weather conditions, the researcher will be carrying out an effort based cetacean survey using a tried and tested scientific methodology. Each voyage will last for approximately 34 days.

Beaufort Postdoctoral Researcher Inter-Species Interactions: Impacts of Top Marine Predators

Applications are invited for a seven year postdoctoral position on marine ecology / megafauna. The Beaufort Marine Research Award is grant aided as part of the Irish Government´s National Development Plan (NDP), by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (DCENR) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (DAFF) under the Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (SSTI) and the Sea Change Strategy.

The candidate will be a postdoctoral researcher, employed through the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre (CMRC), University College Cork http://cmrc.ucc.ie/ .

The project will be jointly implemented in partnership between University College Cork, the Marine Institute and Queens University Belfast.

Background:
The capability of fishing activity to alter fish populations and to impact on the ecosystem is considerable. There is now an acceptance that we must move away from traditional single stock fisheries advice and embrace a more ecosystem based approach to fisheries management. A sustainable fish stock is now a minimum criterion for fisheries management. However, an equally important goal is to maintain the overall quality of the ecosystem which supports the stock to be both productive and robust.

Project:
The overall aim of this Beaufort Marine Award is to harness and integrate the diverse research expertise required to develop a Centre of Excellence on the Island of Ireland that focuses on the development of an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAF). It brings together a consortium with a research track record that will collaborate to turn the available concepts and principles of an EAF into pragmatic action plans that can be used for the sustainable management of fisheries in the waters around Ireland. By doing so, the consortium will be cognisant of principles of ecosystems approach such as those outlined in International agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

As marine mammals and seabirds are located near or at the top of food webs they may have considerable impact on the structuring of pelagic ecosystems. The status of their populations reflect the health of the ecosystem and the sustainability at which it is being managed, thereby acting as high-trophic level indicators which can be used to inform management in an ecosystem approach to managing marine ecosystems. The objectives of this position are to assess the trophic interactions between top marine predators and fisheries in Ireland by determining abundance estimates, food consumption, at-sea distributions and habitat use of pinniped and seabird populations in selected study sites.

Candidate:
The Postdoctoral researcher will require the following skills profile:
* PhD with three years relevant research experience
* Knowledge of pinniped and seabird abundance estimate methodologies and other relevant survey methodologies
* Experience of GIS data modelling (e.g. ArcMarine), databases and metadata standards
* Experience with statistical analysis and statistical modelling e.g. GLMM and GAMM
* Experience with applying telemetry technologies (and spatial data analysis) to determine habitat use of top marine predators
* Experience of top predator dietary analysis (e.g. otolith ID, FASA and SIA)
* Understanding of current fisheries management practices, in particular in Irish waters
* Good publication track record
* Proven ability of team leadership and excellent oral and written communication skills
* Demonstration of project management and networking skills
* Proven ability to secure relevant research funding

Duration and salary:
Duration is 7 years conditional upon review at the end of year three.
Starting salary (gross) is 55,000 pa rising to 67,000 pa with annual increments.
