Activities: Workshops at St Andrews!!

The Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) is hosting two linked workshops in the summer of 2010 in our purpose-built facilities at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. The aim of these workshops is to train participants in the latest methods for design and analysis of distance sampling surveys, including line and point transects. The workshops are taught by leading researchers in the field, using industry-standard software.

The first workshop (24-27 August) will run at an introductory level, and will focus on "conventional" distance sampling methods, as described in the standard reference book "Introduction to Distance Sampling." The workshop will be a blend of theory and practice and participants will learn how to use the program "Distance." Participants will gain a solid grounding in both survey design and methods of analysis for distance sampling surveys.

The advanced distance sampling workshop (30 August - 1 September) will include advanced treatment of: incorporating covariates in detection function modelling, analyses in which detectability on the transect line is not assumed to be perfect (the so-called g(0) problem), automated survey design, advanced stratified survey analysis, advanced trend analysis, and adaptive survey designs. The aim of this workshop is to bring participants up to date with the latest developments in distance sampling methods and software. It is also an opportunity for those actively engaged in the design, analysis and execution of distance sampling surveys to discuss common issues and problems, and set future research directions. The workshop will be a combination of lectures and computer sessions, with considerable time for discussion.

For both workshops, participants are encouraged to bring their own data sets, and can expect to do some preliminary analyses with their data. Computer sessions take place in our modern computer classroom (attached
to the seminar room); participants can use our computers or bring their own laptop computers.

Additional details regarding the workshop can be found at our website

Activities: PAMGUARD course in St. Andrews!

The use of Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) is becoming an increasingly important tool in both marine mammal research and applied in industry.

It is important that individuals using any passive acoustic monitoring software are properly trained to use the software to maximise its full potential. Feedback from users is also important in the ongoing development of such software.

PAMGUARD is currently funded by the OGP E&P Sound and Marine Life Joint Industry Program, and has been established to address the fundamental limitations of existing cetacean passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) software capabilities. PAMGUARD seeks to provide open-source PAM software based on a platform-independent (e.g. Windows or Linux), flexible, modular architecture. The open-source aspect of software development is facilitated through the project's presence on SourceForge, where a community of altruistic developers provides extra
resources. This community currently includes developers with proven PAM experience from both the UK and the USA. Open development means that the software is free and access to the code is easy and assured. It also allows the code's copyright to be protected in perpetuity so that it cannot readily be closed and commercialised to the detriment of its users. It ultimately means that more people have access for development. This generally speeds up innovations and improves the performance and maintainability of the code.

SMRU Ltd are running a PAMGUARD Training course on the 18th and 19th February, in St Andrews. There are still some places available on this course.

The course will be lead by Dr Doug Gillespie of St Andrews University, one of the principle architects of the Pamguard software.

If you are interested in attending the course please see the Pamguard website for further details:

Actividades: Cursos Investigación en Gales!!

Cetacean Survey Training Course in New Quay, West Wales

Join a short course to learn all about British cetaceans, how to survey for them, and contribute to their conservation!

DATE FOR THE 2009 TRAINING COURSES IS SET!

Two-days weekend course, 5th-6th September 2009

The course will consist of illustrated lectures and video presentations as well as headland watches and boat surveys aboard a local research vessel. The area where land and boat trips will be undertaken is the Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC), a place well-known for the presence and high sighting frequency of bottlenose dolphins (the largest population in the UK), harbour porpoises and grey seals. These populations are protected in the SAC following the 1992 EU Species and Habitat Directive.

The Sea Watch Foundation is the most experienced organisation in the UK for training observers and students interested in marine mammals, having run courses for over ten years. It has provided training for staff from all three national statutory conservation agencies, the Environment Agency, CEFAS, Department of the Environment, Wildlife Trusts, Royal Navy, and MMOs working with the oil and gas industries. Most of the field guides on cetaceans on the market in UK have actually been written or had consultations from the Sea Watch Foundation. Thus we hope we can guarantee a very high level training course given by highly experienced staff.

The lectures and videos will focus on general biology and classification of cetaceans, species identification, conservation issues facing UK cetaceans, and recommended monitoring survey methods. The course will be based at New Quay, Ceredigion, West Wales, where our Welsh office is based, and will provide an unparalleled opportunity to see marine mammals in the wild and to contribute to cetacean conservation in Britain.

The practical element of the course will combine both land and boat-based surveys allowing participants to directly learn how to conduct systematic watches and fill in standardised recording forms.

Land and Boat-based work will teach participants the skills needed for:

- identifying the various cetaceans species found in the area
- estimating group size and distinguishing between calves, juveniles and adults
- determining cetacean behaviours
- assessing sea state and other key environmental features
- learning some basic photographic techniques aimed at identifying single individuals

Please note that, due to the unforeseeable weather conditions, the program might change and, in case of particularly adverse weather, the field trips may have to be modified.

All participants will receive a detailed manual on how to record and monitor cetaceans, a species identification booklet, and a certificate for completing the course. The courses will be taught by
experienced and enthusiastic staff from the Sea Watch Foundation.

The price for the course is ?180.00 and includes lectures, boat and land surveys, insurance and all the materials provided, but excludes meals, travel and accommodation.

To book a place or for further information please contact Sightings Officer, Gemma Veneruso. Tel: 01545 561227,
gemma.veneruso@seawatchfoundation.org.uk.

Actualidad: investigación desde Ferries!

In Italy different Institutions (both of public and private sector), Universities and NGO have joined forces to undertake a large scale cetacean monitoring programme from passengers ferries.

The network, active since 2007, monitors presence, relative abundance, distribution and migration timing of cetacean along the following routes:

- Civitavecchia-Golfo Aranci (since 2007) in the Central Tyrrhenian sea;

- Livorno-Bastia and Savona-Bastia (since 2008) in the Pelagos sanctuary;

- Calvi-Nizza (from 2009) in the western part of the Pelagos sanctuary.

On the research the network has already submitted two different MS (5 pages “full-paper”) for the 2008 and 2009 ECS proceedings.

Actividades: Earthwatch Escocia!

Whales and Dolphins of Moray Firth.
On the Expedition.

Spotting threatened whales and dolphins on Scotland's scenic northeast coastline.
Working with Robinson and his colleagues from the Cetacean Research & Rescue Unit (CRRU), you will take to the Moray Firth in 5.4-meter rigid-hulled inflatable boats to conduct systematic surveys of the southern Firth. You will be trained to spot and identify whales and dolphins and to record data such as the composition and structure of groups, their behavior, and geographic positions. You will also take photographs for individual identification. Back at the lab, especially during inclement weather, you will help identify individuals from photographs, catalogue images, and enter data. Your team may also be called upon to help with live whale or dolphin strandings, as the need arises. In your recreational time, there are rare seabird colonies, coastal wildflowers, castles, and Pictish ruins to investigate.
Meals and Accommodations.

Your team will share a rented cottage in the heart of a traditional fishing village, rich in local history and colorful characters. You will share a bedroom with one or two of your teammates, sleeping on beds in your own sleeping bag. The cottage has modern bathroom facilities and a full kitchen. Cooking and cleaning duties will be shared, on a rotational basis, using locally available foods. After dinner, the local pub is pleased to serve a very good range of ales in a friendly atmosphere.

About the Research Area.

Surrounded by majestic cliffs and rolling farmland, the village of Gardenstown in the parish of Gamrie boasts commanding views of the Moray Firth, the largest firth or embayment of its kind on the east coast of Scotland at approximately 5,230 square kilometers. Considering its northerly latitude, the climate of the area is well favored by abundant sunshine and below average rainfall for the UK. Afforded protection by the Scottish Highlands, this vast coastline is comprised of tidally exposed mudflats, dune systems and cliffs, and a composite of headlands and small bays providing a relatively sheltered environment with a vast diversity of habitats.
The research area is an absolute haven for wildlife. Fed by warm and cold waters from the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, the productive, turbid waters of the Moray Firth attract an abundance of fish and cephalopod species, providing rich feeding grounds for numerous species of whale and dolphin, grey and common seal colonies and nationally important concentrations of wintering sea ducks, saw bills, auks and many other families of offshore and nesting seabird - including a mainland gannetry and local puffin colony at Troupe Head, just a few miles from the base. In addition to the large numbers and diversity of marine fauna that exist in the project area, there is a fantastic assemblage of wild coastal flowers, rare birds of prey (such as red kite, osprey and merlin), and many other interesting plants and animals including orchids, otters, badgers, foxes and roe deer.
East of the village of Gardenstown and the Bay of Gamrie lies Pennan, made famous as the main location for the movie Local Hero. Loch Ness lies approximately 100 miles to the west, and the coastline of the surrounding landscapes is scattered with ancient remains and magnificent Pictish and early Christian carved stones.
